HORSES AVAILABLE FOR ADOPTION

ALFIE

  • 12 years
  • 15 hands
  • Arabian
  • Gelding
  • Bay
  • $600

Equidopt Alfie!

Alfie arrived to us from Caroline County on January 9th. He was underweight and suffering from overgrown hooves and a large wound on his right front leg just above the knee. He was gelded at his foster home before we picked him up. The wound on his leg is now healed, we took x-rays and all came up clear, so he was recently introduced to our gelding herd and is loving strutting his stuff with the other boys. Alfie requires an advanced handler on the ground, as he needs further sacking out and exposure to new situations, and he is now receiving training on basic ground manners. We are hoping to start under saddle training soon. Stay tuned for further updates!

Frederick County Animal Control picked Bali up as a stray at the beginning of '08. In May, we discovered that Bali was pregnant, but she unfortunately gave birth to a stillborn foal in August. She is a sweet mare who loves attention and just needs someone with the experience and time to give her the training she needs, both on the ground and under saddle. She ties for feed and grooming. Bali is now going at the walk/trot under saddle and is starting to canter. She has been ridden on the trail and did very well. She will need an adopter who either has experience training green horses under saddle or who can get a professional trainer to work with her. Bali's adoption fee will increase as she starts receiving more training.

Chino arrived to us in March '09 from Caroline County with a body score of 1 out of 9 on the Henneke scale. It was touch-and-go with him for a couple of weeks, as he arrived to us suffering from impaction colic. He ended up having to spend four days in the vet clinic, receing round-the-clock fluids to rehydrate him and jumpstart his digestive system. He has now made a full recovery and has turned into a gorgeous boy! He ties for feed and grooming, is barefoot, and is good for shots and deworming. He requires an intermediate handler on the ground. Chino was recently evaluated under saddle and we found him to be very green at the walk/trot/canter. He is a comfortable ride, but requires an advanced rider, as he is still very wiggly and new to basic riding aids. He has no limitations as far as what his riding career could be, as he has the looks and movement to go far. Chino does crib when tied for feed, but seems to forget about his habit when out in his field with grass and buddies. Chino would do best with 24-hour turnout, as he will crib when left in a stall. This boy will get you noticed, no matter where you go or what you do. His recovery was a true miracle and he deserves that special someone to give him the best life possible!

Cody arrived from Anne Arundel County Animal Control with 4 other horses as a neglect case. Cody is now doing great! His weight and overall health is in peak condition and his trust in humans has greatly improved. He has been castrated and is now ready for a new home. He ties for feed and loves a good grooming session. Cody just started receiving under saddle training, but is still very green and should in no way be considered broke.

Update (7/3): Cody is now in off-site training with Scott Purdum (Advantage Horsemanship). He is still available for adoption.

Javie arrived as a starvation and neglect case from Montgomery County Animal Control, with a Body Condition Score of 1 out of 9. She's off the track and came to us with ulcers all over her gums, so she seems to have come from a very stressful environment. Javie is very well-behaved under saddle, if still very green, and is going w/t/c and has started over fences. She still remembers her life at the track and is sensitive to seat and hands. She should make a great horse for a strong intermediate to advanced rider of any discipline. We will be taking Javie to a few small, local shows this Spring and Summer and look forward to seeing how she does. Javie has been evaluated on the trail and we found her to be somewhat forward, but solid. Javie cribs, which is best managed when given full turnout.

Junebug was brought to us along with Hoedown when he was returned. She is a sweet little girl who loves attention. We were told that she has been used for pony rides with little kids in the past. Junebug seems to have no behavioral or health issues and we will be evaluating her to see if she can in fact be ridden. She can be kept with mares and geldings and would make a wonderful companion pony. Junebug would also LOVE to be adopted with Hoedown (they are very attached), so check him out in the SOS section.

Moonshine is the baby of one of the mares we received from Washington County Humane Society in December '06. He was born last September and has turned into a gorgeous boy! His two blue eyes are absolutely stunning and will definitely make him an eye-catcher! Moonshine ties for feed and grooming and is steadily improving with getting his feet handled by the farrier. He's very laid-back in new situations and should turn into a wonderful horse. Moonshine must go to a home with someone who has experience raising and training yearlings.

Muddy was only 4 months old when he came to DEFHR in December '06. Extremely malnourished and sickly, he had to spend a week at the vet clinic, getting round-the-clock care and fluids, before being strong enough to come to Days End. Over a year ago, a previous adopter offered to take he and ZuZu to her home to give them individualized care and training until they were old enough to return to DEFHR to be broke under saddle and adopted. Muddy is almost three years old and will start his under saddle training soon. He is a sweet boy with lots of spunk and personality. He gets along well with other horses and should make an excellent riding pony. His adoption fee will increase once he is started under saddle and his training progresses.

Equidopt NaNu!

NaNu came to us the first week of December '08 as a starvation and neglect case from Prince George's County. He ranked as a 2 out of 9 on the Henneke Body Condition Scale and had overgrown feet. He was apparently kicked in the face as a foal, which resulted in a fluid-filled sac in the corner of his right eye. He has been castrated and the eye growth has been removed. He was just recently introduced into our gelding herd and is loving having some new buddies to play with. Nanu has just recently been started under saddle. In under two weeks, he's already going w/t. He's a noodle and doesn't like to go forward, but we have no doubt that he's going to be a great ride. And GORGEOUS! Since shedding out, he's taken on a very dark palomino color with light dappling (updated pics to come soon). This boy will definitely get you noticed no matter where you go or what you do. His adoption fee will increase with additional training. Stay tuned.

UPDATE (6/18): NaNu is currently in off-site training for 30 days with a professional trainer who has offered to donate their services. He is still available for adoption.

** Adoption Pending! **

Nash came in with a large impoundment from Washington County Humane Socitey in December '06. He was completely wild upon arrival and wanted nothing to do with humans. He took a year to get to a point where he had gained somewhat of a trust in humans. We sent him to an off-site trainer and they fell in love with this guy. He took a lot of work and extra love, but he's now a total mush! Nash goes w/t/c and over fences in the ring and on trails. He's been trailered off-site to ride at other facilities and he handled it like a pro. He attended his first show in May and behaved beautifully! This boy would be a great pony for a young intermediate rider looking to be active in trail riding or shows. He is a great ride, even if he is a little on the lazy side! This boy's a prize - come snatch him up!

Nelson Video - Under Saddle

Nelson came to us from PG County Animal Control in the beginning of winter '07 as a neglect case. He was very thin, with overgrown hooves and rain rot. He as since fully recovered and has turned into an alert and energetic adolescent. He loves running in the field with his other young herd mates after he's turned out from feeding. He ties for feed and grooming and is good for the vet and farrier. He can be a little pushy on the ground and likes to push his boundaries, so continued ground training is highly recommended with this guy. Nelson is doing very well under saddle and is going solidly at the walk/trot/canter. Due to his age, intense training and work should not start happening for at least another six months. His price will increase as his training progresses.

She had long feet, rainrot, and her teeth needed floating.Olive has now made a full recovery and has been put into training. So far, she is going nicely at the walk/trot and has just started being worked with at the canter. She is currently barefoot and is holding up nicely. Olive ties for feed and grooming and loves baths. Olive requires an intermediate handler on the ground and advanced rider until she gains more miles under saddle. Olive has not been evaluated on trails, but she goes through water willingly. She is not limited in what she could do and has the beautiful movement and flashiness to get you noticed in the show ring!

Pogo is the baby of one of the Washington County Humane Society mares impounded in December of '06 and rehabilitated by the Washington County Humane Society. He was on the verge of death when he was born and mom rejected him, so he was taken to the vet where he stayed for one month while he slowly returned to good health. Pogo came to Days End a month later and where he immediately showed his personality! He ran around his paddock and jumped and played, so we decided to name him after what he resembled...a pogo stick! This little guy is full of spunk and energy! He ties for feed and grooming and is learning to have his feet handled. He does have a bit of mischievousness in him, so he'd be best suited for an experienced handler. Pogo must go to a home with someone who has experience raising and training young horses.

Qutie arrived from Prince George's County Animal Control as a neglect case in early summer '06. She needed work on ground manners but made a quick recovery. She was evaluated under saddle at the beginning of last year and we determined that she was track-broke and green, but had a lot of eagerness to please. A couple weeks into her re-schooling, she suffered a kick to the elbow in the field. X-rays revealed a small hairline fracture and she was on stall and paddock rest for over a year. She is now recovered, back out in the field, and back into work. She is going w/t/c under saddle and has been doing great! We've even hopped her over a couple small fences and she really enjoyed herself! She's remained sound and loves racing around her field, so we feel very optimistic about her future. Qutie definitely lives up to her name - inquire about her today!

oulette came to us from PG County Animal Control in the summer of '06 as a starvation case. Though she was skin and bones and covered in rainrot, we could tell she was going to turn into a beautiful mare...and we were right! This big girl requires an strong intermediate handler on the ground - she's very sweet, but she knows she's big and can be somewhat herd-bound. Her size, conformation, and movement make her an excellent training level dressage prospect. She needs an advanced rider, as she does have quite a bit of get-up-and-go when she's feeling particularly frisky! Roulette has an old, healed bowed tendon, which does not impede on her soundness, but does limit her jumping potential. She cribs, but it is controlled with a cribbing collar and full turnout. This mare will get you seen in the show ring!

Turvey arrived with 23 other horses in December '06 from Washington County. He was feral and had no trust in humans. With time and love, he came around and soon learned to trust people. He learned to stand for the farrier and tie for feed and grooming. Turvey recently returned from off-site training. He received training on the ground until he was old enough to be broke under saddle. He now goes w/t/c under saddle, but is still very new to the whole concept of being ridden. Turvey would be great for someone with experience in handling and riding young, green horses. He'd make a great pony for any discipline. Intermediate handler, advanced rider due to being green. Stay tuned for more updates!

Willow arrived to us years ago as a starvation case and we knew right from the start that she was a special girl. This mare is super sweet and very well-behaved on the ground. Our most beginner volunteers can handle and groom her with no problem at all. She ties for feed and grooming, is barefoot, and is good for the vet and farrier. She requires an intermediate rider, as she can be forward, yet controllable. She's loads of fun to ride and has been the favorite of many volunteers and staff to ride. Due to an injury to her hock a couple of years ago, Willow cannot be jumped and should only be used for pleasure-type riding. Though she can't be put through an intense riding schedule, she thrives on regular work and can get quite frisky when allowed to sit in the field for too long. Willow needs a job and a loving, forever home to call her own. Inquire about her today - she's a sweetie and a keeper!

Zorro arrived this past April with a 7 horse impoundment. He was a body condition of 2 out of 9 on arrival. He was a stallion and had little handling. He has since gained all of his much-needed weight back and has been castrated. He ties for feed, enjoys grooming, and is good for the farrier. Our trainer has just started working with Zorro under saddle and he's really surprising us! He's giving us every indication of having some degree of under saddle training before arriving to us, as he's picking up on everything very quickly and easily. Our trainer has now walk/trot/cantered him in the ring and says he's a very comfy ride! His adopter needs to either have experience training green horses or they need to be able to get a professional trainer to work with him. His price will increase as his training progresses.

ZuZu arrived to DEFHR in December '06 with 23 other horses from Washington County. He was 6 months old at the time and was still at his mother's side. He was not used to humans, so we immediately weaned him from mom and started the process of gaining his trust. ZuZu picked things up like a champ and soon became quite a social butterfly. Over a year ago, a previous adopter offered to take him and Muddy for off-site foster care until they were old enough to be brought back to DEFHR and started under saddle. That time has come and ZuZu is now back with us and ready to start his training. He's a strikingly handsome young boy, with excellent conformation and a great personality. ZuZu's adoption fee will increase once he is started under saddle and his training progresses.

Adam came to us from PG County Animal Control in July '08 as a neglect case. He was a 1 out of 9 on the Henneke body condition scale and had overgrown, unhealthy feet riddled with severe thrush and abscesses. Adam was castrated and made a fairly smooth recovery. Shortly after getting turned out with one of our other geldings in one of our fields, Adam started to experience front-end lameness. Adam has been on stall and paddock rest since and is still experiencing some very mild lameness, though his x-rays came back clean. The vet seems to think that the lameness is originating in the shoulder. Due to Adam's inability to return to 100% soundness, we have decided to make him available in our SOS Program. He is pasture sound and is currently getting turned out for half a day in one of our larger paddocks. Though he may never be able to be ridden, his young age and spunky personality make him a great candidate for a job as a companion horse with someone looking for a project to work with on the ground. Adam gets along very well with other horses and should make a great buddy for someone! He is healthy in every other way and still loves to romp and play around his paddock, even if he is a little on the gimpy side. This boy is loaded with personality that you don't want to pass up on!

Bindi arrived to DEFHR in the beginning of March '09 from Caroline County, along with Chino. We were told Bindi used to be used for barrel racing, and she must have been raced hard, as her knees are arthritic and fused. Though her range of motion in her knees is very limited, she can still be seen cantering and kicking up her heels in her pasture, so they must not cause her too much discomfort. Bindi can be very lightly ridden, at a walk only, by an advanced beginner rider. Bindi can be kept with both mares and geldings and gets along very well with all horses. She ties for feed, is barefoot, is good for the vet and farrier, and has wonderful ground manners. This girl is an absolute sweetheart and she deserves a loving home.

** Adoption Pending! **

Harper came to us from Montgomery County AC in early 2008. She was extremely emaciated, ranking at a Henneke Body Condition Score of 1 out of 9, had long, chipped feet, and was suffering from lack of dental care. It took a while to get the weight back on her, but now she's going strong. We considered keeping her for a Program Horse, as she's wonderful for grooming and handling, but she had a little too much spunk under saddle - you'd never know she was 25! Harper goes both English and Western and requires a solid intermediate to advanced rider, as she can be very forward under saddle. She does know her stuff and we're wondering if at some point she was used for Dressage. Harper's a wonderful mare and deserves a home where she can be ridden for pleasure, but mainly live out the rest of her days in retirement and leisure. She has been kept with mares and geldings. Harper has not been evaluated on the trail.

Hoedown was just recently returned to us due to financial issues after over three years of living at his adoptive home. Hoedown arrived to us in 2005 as a stallion, suffering from founder and severely overgrown hooves. He is now doing wonderfully and is quite a feisty little guy. He can be kept with mares and would make a good companion pony. Hoedown has a lameness of his right stifle, which does not seem to decrease his quality of life, but does leave him unable to be ridden. Hoedown's exposure to grass must be strictly limited. Hoedown would LOVE to be adopted with his good friend, Junebug. Take a look at her as well in the Available for Adoption section.

Persian came to us on the last day of 2008 as a stray from Animal Control. He came to us a woolly mammoth, but under all that fur was a very thin boy, covered in tick bites. His hooves were extremely overgrown and malformed because of their lack of care. His long hooves made his gait very uncoordinated and it was painful to watch him try to walk. Persian is now doing much better. He has put on quite a bit of weight since being put out in our lush fields and can often be seen trotting and cantering around when he's feeling a bit frisky. He gets along great with both mares and geldings and should make a great companion for any horse. We suspect that he might have Cushings Disease, but right now requires no other treatment other than body clippling in the summer. His adopter will need to be prepared to continue the corrective trimming of his feet every four weeks.

Solo arrived to us from PG County in the beginning of '08 as a starvation case. He was off-the-track and, whether it is due to his racing career or not, he has two blown knees. X-rays revealed extensive arthritic changes and fusing of the bones in the knee. He has limited flexion in both front legs, but that doesn't stop him from racing around the fields and playing with his friends. Solo is good for the vet, farrier, and de-worming. He ties for feed and grooming and loves to be scratched on his itchy spot! He was evaluated recently by a vet who cleared him for light riding (walk only) if he is quiet. If we evaluate him as being suitable to lightly ride, a weight limit for the rider will be set. Solo needs to go to a home where he can have daily 24-hour turnout. Contact us if you're interested in giving this sweet boy a loving home! He's a big teddy bear of a horse and just needs someone to give him the love he deserves.

  Equidopt Fergie!

        Fergie Pics

Fergie arrived from Frederick County at the end of April 2009 with Gretchen. She came to us as a Body Condition Score of 1 out of 9. Her feet were overgrown and she had severe rainrot. So far she is making a fairly smooth recovery. She has been steadily putting on weight, her feet have been trimmed, and her rainrot is no more. We've found that she ties for feed and she and Gretchen are absolutely inseperable! It was great to see them run in their paddock on their first day of turnout. Stay tuned for more updates.

Equidopt Gretchen!

Gretchen Pics

Gretchen came to us from Frederick County at the end of April 2009 as a neglect case. She arrived with Fergie and had a Body Condition Score of a 2 out of 9. She had overgrown hooves, rainrot, and very little handling. Gretchen also suffered from an infection on the left side of her mouth where she is missing one of her top molars. So far, Gretchen is getting better about being handled and is learning to mind her manners. She has had her feet trimmed, her rainrot has cleared up, and she's shedding out to be a beautiful sandy gold color. This mare is going to be gorgeous once she's fully recovered. Stay tuned for more updates.

Hidalgo Pics

Hidalgo came to us from Caroline County in October '08 as a starvation and neglect case, along with Ice and Jolie. He ranked on the Henneke Body Condition Scale as a 1 out of 9 (severely emaciated). We have been told by someone who knew Hidalgo years ago that he is registered with the American Paint Horse Association and that he used to be used for Dressage and Eventing. He is currently in the middle of his rehabilitation process and still has a long way to go, but we have every reason to think he'll make a full recovery. Once he is fully recovered, he will be evaluated under saddle and placed in our SOS Program.

Update (1/16/09): Hidalgo has come up lame on his left hind leg and the vet has diagnosed it as a ruptured peroneus tertius tendon. He has been put on long-term stall rest.

Update (3/23/09): Hidalgo has been cleared by the vet for a couple hours of paddock turnout per day. So far he is full of spunk and SOUND!

Neeko arrived to us on the last day of June 2009 from Frederick County Animal Control with O'Hara. He ranks on the Henneke Body Condition Scale as a 2 out of 9, has rainrot and thrush, and needs his teeth floated. He is a sweet boy and we can tell that he's going to be absolutely beautiful once he gains the weight. We look forward to getting to know him and will post updates as his rehabilitation progresses.

Picture coming soon.

O'Hara arrived to us with Neeko from Frederick County Animal Control at the end of June 2009. She ranks on the Henneke Body Condition Scale as a 2 out of 9, with rainrot, thrush, and teeth in need of floating. We can already tell that O'Hara is going to be a fun mare once she's feeling better. She already has a lot of spunk and it's going to be very exciting to learn more about her. She's showing us every indication of making a smooth recovery and we will post updates as her rehabilitation progresses.

Picture coming soon.

Petunia came to us from Baltimore County the last day of June 2009. She ranks on the Henneke Body Condition Scale as a whopping 9 out of 9 and arrived to us with horribly overgrown hooves, known as slipper feet. She is suffering from Hyperlipidemia, a condition that is very common in donkeys, and we have started her on a very strict feeding program to try to get her weight under control. She got her feet trimmed the day after she arrived and we can already tell that she is feeling much better. She's a very sweet donkey who is very easy to handle, if just a little stubborn, so we know she is going to turn into a wonderful girl once she is feeling better. We will post updates as her rehabilitation progresses.

Picture coming soon.
